    Question HELP w/Humanities

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Tee and I am new to the forum as well to the CLEP exam. I am short 10 credits to finally have degree in hand. I have signed up for the monthly rate and have started to study the exam for Humanitites. Of course, first timer here is taking the six credit exam and after the first 10 minutes felt like a loser. I did print out the manual section and did well on this exam; however, literature and art was not favorite subject in school.

Is the purpose of the flashcards to give the student some assitance with learning certain aspects of literature or is does the student need to know most of the subject matter? I am just dazed & confused at this point.

Is there a better way or is working with the flashcards a means to at least learning some of the subject matter?

    Any suggestions are welcome!!!

    Tee

    Hello Tee -

    Welcome to the IC-Forums!!

Preparing for an exam is an individual adventure in itself dependent on how much time you put in, your method of study, your study tools, and of course how well you absorb material. Humanities is a very broad subject and will require some very broad preparation.

The key to the flashcards is found in what I call the 4 R's: Repetition - re-enforces - recognition - retention. In other words, using more than just simple memorization of a person, place, or thing, but providining a bridge or a link to instant and longer recall.

Believe me when I say that the IC Flashcard system is second to none, however you may, or should (I did) use some other sources of study material such as: REA books, Comex books, Rudman books, Pass-Your-Class guides, Standard Deviant videos and Petersons practice exams.

Finally, use the "SEARCH" feature at the top of the page to look for other related threads on Humanities - you will find quite a lot of great information already listed. GOOD LUCK!!

    Hello Tee! Welcome to IC.

I can't add much to Shoto's great advice except to say be sure and really learn the explanations to the answers in the flashcards and not just the word or phrase that fills in the blanks. I don't know how much difference this makes in the humanities cards because I haven't looked at those but in all the rest that I have used it was important.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Tee,

Humanties was my first CLEP exam too. I used InstantCert and I think the Barrons guide, and honestly felt like a loser most of my study time. For me, InstantCert gave me the most confidence. I would just go through all the flashcards until I knew most of the answers and then would search the internet for people/names/art that I just wasn't grasping.

What I realized when I took this test was that I retained the most information from InstantCert. Having to fill in the blanks and read the questions/answers throughly made a big difference.

I would also take the Peterson Practice tests to gauge how you are doing.

Stick with the flashcards, just like ShotoJuku said - the 4 R's works.

    Good luck,

    Kim

    Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks, everyone for all the advice....now, I do not feel so bad about not knowing most of the items listed on the exam. I'll continue to work through the flashcards!

On the Dantes exam, are the results given once the student completes the exam? Does anyone know?

    Hi Tee,

    Welcome to the board.

DANTES mail your scores to you within 2-3 weeks after you take the exam. CLEP displays your score on the computer screen immediately after you finish the exam (except for English Composition with Essay: For this exam, they send the essay away to be graded).

DANTES has traditionally been a pencil and paper exam. However, they are currently introducing new computer-based tests. If you should happen to take a CBT version of DANTES, you will receive your score immediately.

    Hope that helps,
    Snazzlefrag

    Default Snazzlefrag-Thanks

    Snazzlefrag,

Thanks so much for the info. One last question, where can the test be taken? Or is this info posted somewhere...like a web site or something?

    Cool Thanks!!!

    Fondue,

You passed the Humanitites exam? Congrats...I see your record 10-1 that is wonderful. I wish I had known about these exam sites prior to spending several thouands of dollars in school loans . I might have finished sooner. Thanks for the links for the various testing centers and such. I am not so sure about the Humanities exam...most of the material this ole girl has forgotten. I think I'll continue to study and see what happen in the next week and see if my scores improve, if not, then on too taking 4 of the Dantes exams. Where I am more comfortable with the information and I know my scores will be higher.

    Tee
