    Default Excelsior Psychology Major

    Hi All,

I just downloaded the current version of the Guidelines for the Major in Psychology from Excelsior (I had an older version).

In the new pdf file, there is an announcement that they "anticipate that requirements for the major in Psychology will change" as of January 1, 2007.

So if any of you are planning on doing a Psychology degree based on the existing requirements, you might want to make sure you enroll before the end of this year.

I couldn't find any details about the actual changes they expect to make. But I feel confident in guessing that the changes will make the requirements more stringent than they are currently.

Has anybody else heard any further details? Can anybody who is already enrolled find out from their advisor for us?

    Thanks,
    Snazzlefrag

    Default ECE Psych Major

I'm an enrolled student at ECE, so I called and spoke to an advisor about the proposed changes for the psych major. She said she couldn't discuss them until they had been formally adopted. After that, she said it might be possible to call and talk to an admissions counselor about the changes when it's closer to the date they're scheduled to be implemented.

Unhappy Major Changes to Psych degree requirements

For those of you who are planning to pursue a BS degree in Psychology through Excelsior College, you might want to consider enrolling BEFORE the end of this year.

Yesterday I e-mailed an advisor on the Liberal Arts Advising Team at Excelsior about the changes they anticipate making to the degree requirements effective January 1, 2007. This is what she wrote in reply:

“I cannot provide you with the specific changes to the Psychology major at this time. What I can tell you, however, is that this particular major will become much more prescribed--there will be fewer choices (no longer choose 4 out of 12 subjects from a list under Section II--now it will be 5 out of 5 required).

Also, our current major requirements are able to be met exclusively by Credit by Exam if a student wishes. This will no longer be the case under the new requirements. In fact, for a few of the requirements, students will have to transfer in the credit from other schools until such a time as we increase our course offerings in support of the major requirements.”

Just thought I’d pass this along….

    Unhappy Plan re-shaping

that seriously puts a dent in my plans.

But are we inferring that enrolling now will lock us into the current requirements?

I didn't really intend on enrolling right away, but now, it seems to be a necessity.

    Cheers.

    Hi Shadow...

Sorry to hear this puts a dent in your plans, but I'm glad you found out NOW before it was too late!

Yes, as I understand it, if you enroll BEFORE the end of this year, you will fall under the current requirements which allow you to earn all of your credits by exam. After January 1, 2007, that will no longer be the case.

I hope this still works out for you! Good luck!

    Hi Shadowcross,

As long as you enroll BEFORE the policy change (expected on Jan 1st, 2007), you will be locked in to the policy that exists on the date you enroll.

If you enroll AFTER the policy change, you will be bound by the new rules.

So, yes! It is important that you ENROLL prior to the policy change, if you wish to use the current policies. We have three and a half months before the change, so there is a little bit of leeway...but not much!

I plan on enrolling before the end of November!

    Hope that helps,

    Oh my...

I was hoping to enroll next spring but it looks like I better work it out a LOT sooner. Thanks for sharing this information, Kiwi. And Snazz, thanks for sharing that if you sign up now it locks the present criteria in. Very good to know.

Just a quick clarification in case anybody needs it....

You only have to ENROLL in the Psych degree before the policy change takes effect. You don't actually have to COMPLETE the work by then.

The enrollment fee covers you for one year, and if you still haven't completed your degree within that year, you would simply need to pay a smaller 'continuance' fee to cover yourself for another year.

So there is no rush as far as the actual exams/courses are concerned. The only issue is whether or not you enroll in the degree plan before the new policy comes into effect.

    Hope that helps,
