Hello All,
I am new here and need some help. I am in the military (24 years) and can take the exams for free, but I am not familiar with a lot of the materials required to CLEP. I have picked up some of the study guides, but since I do not know the material, they are really not of any help to me. I am within 3 credits from an AA with Central Texas College (Eng Comp w/essay, US Hist II and Algebra) . I CLEP'd English Comp w/o essay 8 years ago, but they will not accept it so I will have to take the one w/ essay. I took College Algebra in 1987, but the college I went to back then mis-entered it as "Intro to Algebra" while upgrading their system and cannot find the orginal records, so I have to take it again. The problem is, I do not remember any of it. Is there any hope for me or am I just going to have to suck it up and take the actual class? I have not joined InstantCert, just the forum. Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. DCW |

Thank you both for yout replies.
I am just not sure about re-learning the Algebra. It has been 21 years since I took the class. Even though I work with numbers on a daily basis, I do not remember any of the formulas and do not know if I can re-learn them from a book. I am also enrolled with AMU (American Military University) for a BA in Logistics and Transportation Management and one of the classes required is Statistics. That is something I have never done and do not know if I can learn from a book. I have been told that it is not possible, but would try if anyone here knows of a way. If I can complete that course, it would also probably satisfy the math requirement for Central Texas College for my AA. Thanks again, DCW |

I don't know who told you that it was not possible to learn math (or anything else for that matter) from a book. The people here do it everyday. I suggest the Barron's 101 Statistics book for a start. Look at the exam specific threads for these tests as well to see the common information covered on the exams. Remember, you don't have to be able to recite formulas from memory, you are answering multiple choice questions and applying concepts. I think people get scared by math especially and the few "type in a number to answer" questions. I believe with patience, time and some self decipline you can learn anything you want, especially well enough to pass a CLEP or DSST. Self-doubt is your worst enemy, so be confidant and believe in yourself. I KNOW it is possible to learn on your own.

I hope its possible to learn math and formulas from a book because thats what I'm trying to do right now, I started studying for stats 2 weeks ago and though I am not ready yet I hope to be within the next two weeks. Although I will warn you some of the formulas are still making my eyes bug out not all of them are.
