Default BYU Public Speaking – TMA 150

BYU Public Speaking – TMA 150

I just finished this online self study course w/ BYU. This course is a good alternative to the DSST public speaking course. The course consists of 9 modules:

Module 1: Facing you fear and the power of public speaking
Module 2: Connecting with your audience
Module 3: Getting acquainted with your voice and learning ethics
Module 4: Selecting, research, and organizing your speech
Module 5: The speaker’s language
Module 6: Informative public speaking
Module 7: Persuasion with passion
Module 8: Argumentation, critical thing and ethics
Module 9: Speaking on special occasions

This course was approximately $411 and took me about 5 weeks to finish. It is self paced however I think the maximum number of lessons you can do is three per week. If you work at full speed you can wrap it up in three weeks!

This course has no text book all the lessons are on-line. For lessons 1 and 2 there is a self assessment test at the end of each module. For lessons 3 through 9 you will prepare a speech on cassette tape and mail it in. The speeches range from 5 to 10 minutes.

It was a pretty good course. I ended with an A

That's a great alternative to the DSST Speech exam. I took that exam a couple of months ago and HATED IT. UGH. I passed, so I guess that's a good thing, but if I had to do it over again, I'd opt for the "sure" thing and take the class.

I am new to online classes, I am confused, I am in the military and have free tuition assistance but I am unsure how to apply that to this school?

How does one enroll? Do you just pick a class and pay? How do I apply my TA?

It is very easy to take a class at BYU through there correspondence (self passed) catalog. You just go to the website, pick a class, and then pay for it. You don’t have to be enrolled in the school. You may want to call and see if they have any military assistance like a reduced tuition rate.

Default From the Syllabus

From the Syllabus:

Required Materials
The required materials for this course are a tape recorder and blank tapes.

Course Structure
Each lesson will include information that will assist you in becoming a better communicator— whether it’s speaking in public, teaching a class, leading a discussion, enhancing personal relationships, or improving listening skills.

Lesson 1 discusses the problem of fear in public speaking and suggests ways to overcome that fear.

Lesson 2 explains how to analyze and connect with diverse audiences.

In lesson 3 you will read some very important information on ethics and speech delivery. You will become familiar with your voice by recording your favorite poem and a speech by Mark Twain into your tape recorder.

In lesson 4 you will select a topic for a speech, gather material, organize the body of the speech, add a beginning and ending to the speech, and outline the speech. You will record a self-introductory speech.

Lesson 5 discusses the use of language. You will rewrite your self-introductory speech and record it again with your changes.

Lesson 6 teaches the speech style for informational speaking. You will write and record an informative speech.

Lesson 7 is on persuading with passion—learning the methods and tools of persuasion. You will write and record a persuasive speech.

Lesson 8 is on argumentation, critical thinking, and ethics. You will write and record an argumentative speech.

Lesson 9 teaches speaking for special occasions. For the final assignment for this course you will write and record an after-dinner or tribute speech.

Thanks for your information, I emailed them asking about tutition assistance and military payments. I much rather not pay the 411.00 when I can get it for free.

Wow, that syllabus makes me want to take the course whether or not I need it for credit! (But, I may be kind of a freak that way. )

I was looking at the BYU Distance Learning site the other day and was impressed by the breadth of their offerings. The prices were very good. Thanks for pointing out this particular class.

FYI, I completed the entire course in three days, they did not seem to care that I sent three assignments per envelope for three consecutive days.
