Default Excelsior -liberal arts MATH MAJOR -

has anyone pursued this major at Excelsior?

i looked at the catalog and there are about 10 math courses that will be have to be taken.

any suggestions about schools where you took this courses to complete the degree?

    i appreciate your help.

I did not take math as a major and I dont know anyone crazy enough to try but most people I know who went to excelsior took courses at Penn foster and LSU independent study courses. I dont know if you can do them all there but it is something worth looking into.

I took Calc I FOUR TIMES before I finally passed the class. I couldn't imagine taking all these listed above.

i am grateful for the links.

i am not totally decided on doing the Math thing yet.

if i take the GRE - Math though, for what credit would it be applied?

some years ago, the GRE - Psychology with good scores allowed Psychology majors to cover most of their necessary hours, but Excelsior changed it.

anyone know how this GRE - Math would be applied to the Math program?

Default GRE - Math // Excelsior

I just spoke with admissions at Excelsior.

The guy told me you could get a range of 3 - 30 hours credit for the Math required hours, just depends on how well you do on the exam.

They will distribute it starting at the lower level credit then upper level. That sounds like a good option.

I also spoke with GRE people. The GRE Subject test dates are coming out in July so, & testing in the Fall. That wait sucks.....

    thnks Cinderly!

BELLA, just to make you aware of all of your options concerning a Math major.

Charter Oak also has a concentration in Mathematics available. The GRE Mathematics test will also apply towards this concentration. Charter Oak awards 24 credits for a score of 40% or higher on the test. This is a much easier standard to meet than Excelsior's 80% score to get the full 30 credits from them.

Their Math concentration requires 36 credits. This is straight from their catalog concerning how the Math requirements if you use the GRE Math exam:

"The GRE Subject Test in Mathematics, evaluated at 24 credits (15 lower, 9 upper), plus 12 credits beyond the freshman level to include at least 6 upper level credits which may be selected from such areas as analysis, Calculus-Based Probability and Statistics, Abstract or Modern Algebra, Topology, and Set Theory."

I'm nor sure exactly on how the credit breakdown would go. That being said, you'll notice you'll need 12 additional credits. 6 of those credits must be upper level math courses. You could probably take care of these by completing the ALEKS Math courses at ALEKS -- Assessment and Learning, K-12, Higher Education, Automated Tutor, Math.

There has been recent discussion on the forums concerning these. I am specifically referring to their Business Statistics and 'Statistics for the Behavioural Sciences'. Business Statistics is recommended as 3 credits of upper-level Statistics. Stats for Behavioural Sciences is recommended as 3 credits of upper-level Math.

There are also ample ALEKS courses that may very well meet the other requirements for the 12 non-Freshman level math credits still needed for the concentration. I see relatively little difference between a Math major and a Math concentration, but thats just me.

I believe that ALEKS costs $20 a months for access to all of the courses at the same time. Sort of the same way IC works.

In any event, I though I'd point out this particular option for you. I'd highly consider this option over Excelsior.
