American Literature
I did some research and the Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature seems to be what is recommended for this cleo. I am almost through with it and so I decided to take one of the Peterson exams and there were questions quoting passages where you were supposed to know the author. Obviously this book doesn't go into that much detail. Can anybody provide me with some good feedback regarding this test? Thanks

I am only using the Idiot's Guide and the Peterson's practice tests and am taking the CLEP monday morn. I am a Psych major but like to read for pleasure, although I haven't read MANY of the books mentioned in the idiot's guide. I sure wish there was flashcards on this site for this CLEP.

check specific exam feedback
I took this exam in December (I did post feedback) it wasnt that hard an exam there were some websites in the specific exam feedback section that you might find helpful. This exam had some of the literary devices in it (my version), make sure you know the big names in literature, types of literature in specific periods why the were considered new, first published female, literary movements etc. I have forgotten specifics on the exam but that should help you out. I remember Walt Whitman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Norman Mailer, Amy Tan, Edgar Allen Poe etc. Don't know if that will help you out or not. Watch your time on this one as well.

Something my sister and I did on this exam was to look at the official CLEP practice test and make a list of all authors or books mentioned that were unfamiliar to us and then look them up on SparkNotes. I read quite a few book summaries on SparkNotes using the list as a guide and it was very helpful. A lot of later American Lit classics are sort of........(can I say this?).........trashy, so they weren't ever things I had read and they weren't covered in the Christian school textbook I used as basic prep.
 I got a 61 on the test.

I used only the Idiot's Guide (not IC) and passed! Once you get into the last 1/3 of that book, it goes too fast- there are TONS of modern authors and no way to learn them all. Focus on the first 2/3 of the book and browse the last 1/3.

I just got back from taking the American Lit CLEP (it's Monday here in Japan) and I passed with a 61! I used the Idiot's Guide and took all 3 Peterson's practice tests and then wrote down all the answers from the tests to study. There were a few authors on the CLEP that weren't on the practice material. There were quite a few matching passages to authors and authors to literary movements.
