Does anyone have the link to the English 100 Course at Penn Foster? I just want to be sure I am reading the right course description.
Thanks a million, ICS

Here is the description from the PFC Catalog: ENG100 English Composition (3 credits) Writing difficulties; grammar review (sentences, parts of speech, punctuation marks, and paragraphs); defining unfamiliar terms; finding ideas through freewriting and brainstorming; organizing ideas; principles of revising and editing; figures of speech; writing for the senses; getting the readers’ attention; descriptive writing; first-person narratives; reflective and persuasive essays; thesis statements. PREREQ: None Here is the ACE description of the course: (you have to register to view this full description) English Composition (ENG 100) Organization Course Number: (ENG 100) ACE Transcript Data: ICS-0194 Organization: Penn Foster College Location: Independent Self-Study. Length: Distance Education Program Dates: January 2003 – Present Description: Independent Self-Study. Student will be able to create sentences that mean exactly what is intended without the reader doing extra work, make a point simply but emphatically and back it up with persuasive evidence, maintain the reader's interest no matter how uninteresting the subject matter might be, use the best approach to begin each piece of writing and recognize when it is truly finished, and apply the strategies professional writers use, from brainstorming and freewriting to outlining, from creating sentences and paragraphs to revising and editing. Objective: To develop effective writing skills for a specific purpose and audience. Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to create sentences that mean exactly what is intended without the reader doing extra work, make a point simply but emphatically and back it up with persuasive evidence, maintain the reader's interest no matter how uninteresting the subject matter might be, use the best approach to begin each piece of writing and recognize when it is truly finished, and apply the strategies professional writers use, from brainstorming and freewriting to outlining, from creating sentences and paragraphs to revising and editing. Instruction: Major topics covered in the course are grammar basics, the writing process, descriptive writing, narrative writing, reflective writing, and persuasive writing. Methods of instruction include self study, study guide, textbooks, lesson exams, and a final proctored examination. Credit Recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in English Composition (6/07). -------- I am fairly certain that, despite what the ACE description says, there is NO final proctored exam for this course. Instead, a final essay is submitted via email, which accounts for 1/3 of your final grade. From what I have gathered, there are three or four open-book, untimed, multiple-choice module exams covering grammar-type questions (submitted online). Then four or five essays must be submitted, with the last essay being in lieu of a proctored final. Hope that helps, Snazzlefrag

Penn Foster is a Nationally Accredited school. However, many of their courses have been evaluated for college credit by ACE (the same organization that evaluates the CLEP and DANTES exams etc.). As a result, many colleges may now accept certain credits from PFC. They are still not as widely accepted as Regionally Accredited credits though. I don't know with certainty whether TESC will accept PFC credits, but I have a very strong suspicion that they will accept credits from those PFC courses that have been ACE evaluated. Hope that helps, Snazzlefrag

Ahhhh ok. That's great! I checked out the PFC website, I have never searched for ACE evaluated classes- how would I find these? I searched many classes on the PFC (college- or career school?) and didn't find any distinction for ACE evaluated classes. Search tips please!!

Go to the search page on the ACE web site. Enter "Penn Foster" in the organization name field. It will display all the courses from Penn Foster which have been evaluated for college credit. Have fun exploring, Snazzlefrag

Can anyone tell how long the PF course takes; 8, 12, 16 weeks? There book says “Independent Self-Study; how quickly can it be completed? As Snazzlefrag mentioned, “there are three or four open-book, un-timed, multiple-choice module exams covering grammar-type questions (submitted online). Then four or five essays must be submitted, with the last essay being in lieu of a proctored final.”
You know how it goes on the slippery slope. I don’t mind the work, just trying to get it done without delay! Are there any proctored exams? Realistically, how quickly can it be completed? Appreciate your help, ICS
