Default Algebra Bomb

Blew the Algebra Clep. It is obvious that I need more time to do the problems no matter how well I understand the material. I think I need to take Algebra on line for the credit. Any suggestions? Excelsior wants $870 plus books for the course. A little steep, but I need to do it on line because I travel all the time. Help?

Look for threads on Penn Foster College Technical Math 1 in the SEARCH area.

How about CLEP Math? I was able to find more literature on it than on Algebra one. Checked out 5 CLEP General exams books at the library, did preptests and got 70.

Pat,

There are several good options available to you for an online College Algebra class (I assume you needed this specific class because you're going for a Business degree...correct?). However, be aware that in order to take a College Algebra class, you will first have to meet the prerequisite for that college (usually Intermediate Algebra) OR get a high enough score on the math placement test.

I just completed an online College Algebra class through a local community college here in Texas, but anyone can sign up for the class. I believe I paid $149 for the class, and it's not that much more for an out-of-state student. In case you're interested, here is the link to the college: Kingwood College

The class I took was with Dr. Martin through "KC Distance Learning". I know that his Summer class is full, but you could still get into the Fall class.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

JoAnne

Pat,

LSU has a College Algebra class...distance learning. It's not online. Check out this link:

Default distance learning college algebra

Do you know if the lsu distance learning college algebra course actually makes you meet the prereq's, I was planning on taking the college algebra clep test but this might actually work better for me. I just hate taking placement exams.

jec,

In checking out numerous colleges that offer College Algebra, I have found that 99.9% of them REQUIRE that you meet the prerequisite of Intermediate Algebra (or similar) OR passing a placement test, and that included LSU when I contacted them.

However, I recently found one college that does NOT require that you prove that you have met the prerequisite, but you would have to make sure that your college will accept it as meeting the requirement (I'm not positive that this qualifies as pre-calculus, but since they use a College Algebra book, I would think that it should). The class is through Independent Study with University of Kansas. This is the direct link to their website:Distance Learning Education Independent Study Mathematics Credit Courses: University of Kansas Continuing Education. Learn and Study Intermediate Mathematics, Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus Mathematics, Topics in Mathematics, Calculus I, Calculus

Here is their course description:

MATH 101 Algebra (3).
Coordinate systems, functions and their graphs; linear, quadratic, general polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions; equations and inequalities. Not open to students with credit in MATH 104. Prerequisite: MATH 002 or two years of high school algebra and a score of 22 or higher on ACT mathematics, or a qualifying score on the mathematics placement test. Eight written assignments; midcourse and final examinations.

Sullivan and Sullivan. College Algebra: Enhanced with Graphing Utilities, 4th ed., Pearson Prentice Hall, 2006.

Required equipment:

A graphing calculator.
The course tuition and fees are $676.20, and the materials cost is $23.00. The textbook and the calculator are a separate purchase.

The price is a little steep, but at least it's one alternative.

Good luck!

JoAnne

Default Failed my Penn Foster Final

Did anyone ever see that episode of Mr. Bean where he kept trying to cheat because he got the wrong exam paper? Honestly, that's how I felt. I simply ran out of time and the things they tested on were not what I was expecting.

I can take a makeup test, but I don't think I can pass it even though I had an 84 overall on all my other tests. I need time to work on the problems. If I had two hours, I could probably pass.

I think I'll take another look at College Math, since I haven't failed that yet and I did learn a lot.

Boo hoo!

PS: I've never failed anything or even gotten a D, so this is quite an experience.
If it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger, right? Oh yeah, feeling stronger already. Not!
