Default Excelsior and Graded CLEPS

G'day,

Has anyone heard about Excelsior changing their policy in regard to graded CLEPS?

I enrolled in December and the wife enrolled in January. She completed Principles of Management and was given a pass - two weeks later I completed Principles of management and was given an A.

The wife contacted Excelsior and they said that as of January they are no longer issuing graded results for CLEPs. We aren't sure if they meant all CLEPS or only some of them (including Principles of Management) and whether this affects those that enrolled before January or not.

So has anyone else heard anything?

Thanks

Regards

I would contact Excelsior in regards to their policy. When you find something out, please post and let us know. I have just enrolled, and will be curios to see what they say.

The following is from the 2007 revision to the "Student Guide to Credit by Examination at Excelsior":

Quote:
All CLEP exams are delivered by computer, and the passing (C) score for these computer-delivered CLEP exams is 50. Most CLEP exams for which we previously awarded letter grades must now use pass/fail grading because there is not sufficient data on the new computer-delivered exams to recommend minimum scores for B and A.

From the guide, the only CLEP that is still awarded a letter grade is English Literature. The CLEP exams for foreign languages is still given a letter grade, but I believe it is either an 'A' or a 'C'.

Hi,

I enrolled in January this year and got a letter grade for "Principles of Management).
Check out this site: https://www.excelsior.edu/portal/pag..._schema=PORTAL
I think your wife should have gotten an letter too, but the best is to talk to Excelsior.

Good luck,

kckusek

Default Excelsior's response

G'day,

Well we contacted excelsior and this is what they said:

Quote:
In regard to the CLEP exams, the Principles of Management, has a scoring history. It was a graded exam, up until January, 2007. Anyone who took the exam after January 1, 2007, gets a score of pass or fail, by a change in College-wide score conversion policies. The staff in our Assessment Unit with expertise in psychometrics make these determinations, and there is some explanation to be found in the CLEP Section of our publication, called "Student Guide to Credit By Examination at Excelsior College." You can access the publication under the heading "Catalogs" under the Excelsior College Publications Request link at our Web site.

Now we didn't push, nor did we let them know I was granted an A in January but it does seem that they have changed the policy. I plan on doing Macroeconomics on Tuesday and am interested to see what they do with that.

Regards

I think the reason you got an A and your wife got a pass has more to do with when you enrolled rather than when you took the exam. Since you enrolled in Dec. 2006, then you probably were covered by the policy of awarding grades for that exam. I'll bet you get a grade for Macro, too.
Colleges usually hold you to the policies in place at the time you enrolled, and they don't change until you either graduate or leave the program.
It is important that you keep a copy of the handbook from when you first enrolled so you can see if mistakes are being made.

I hope they don't go back and change my A's, B's & C's into P's!!!

In My opinion, That really stinks. That will definitely make transcripts from EC look suspect! I'm worried as it is what my EC transcript is going to look like when I apply to grad school! Yikes!

From what I can see to major advantage of EC is only the transferability in of D's. Letter grades used to be their #1 advantage over COSC & TESC.

Keep us posted with any other new developments!

G'day,

Well I think the writing is on the wall. The student guide shows that the majority of examinations are no longer graded, while the "Exam Cut Score Charts" (the link provided by kckusek) still shows the old information (apparently this hasn't been updated since January 2006).

I have sent an email to verify if the "A" will stand due to the fact that it was a graded exam when I enrolled or whether this will be "corrected" at some stage. The online status report is unofficial so I am half expecting to lose that A but I will let everyone know the response I get on Monday.

Anyone who has enrolled this year and does the exam this year I would expect would end up with a non-graded Pass (regardless of what may appear on the unofficial status report). If the exam was done last year and they enrolled this year I would expect it to be graded. Either way, I will let you know what I find out when I get a response.

Regards

Sounds good!
I enrolled 2 weeks ago and currently Excelsior is processing my official evaluation. I am taking Clep Management and Dsst Supervision wednesday, and I will post my results when EC puts them on my status report. I am fully expecting to only get a "pass" grade for Management.

Default Results are in

G'day,

I have had it confirmed that anyone sitting the tests from January onward will not be given a graded score. My "A" has been removed from my online status report. The Student guide to credit by exam is correct while the online cut-off charts will be corrected.

Anyone (who has passed this exam this year) that has been given a graded score, there is a good chance that this will be "corrected" before the online status report becomes an official transcript.

Regards
