The DSST is graded on a curve with the total points being somewhere between 20 and 80 points. They call this curve "scaling". Some exams are more diffcult than others, and the advantage of scaling is that this reflects this fact. The passing score on a DSST is supposed to be the average score that a 'C' student would score on the exam after taking the actual class.

The actual number of questions you have to get correct are dependent upon each individual exam. The harder the exam, the less questions you would probably have to score.

Unfortunately, there isn't a clear cut answer to your question. My advice is to study until you are comfortable with the material. Personally, I always knew when I was ready for an exam. I wouldn't go take it before I felt 100% sure.
